WELCOME

With over 20 years of experience in the construction and engineering industries — including a background in building surveying — I bring a practical, compliance-focused approach to bushfire assessment work.

Great Southern Bushfire Assessments was founded to offer something more personal: a service that’s professional, highly informed, and built on real conversations.

Working closely with designers, architects, builders, and homeowners during the early planning stages, ensuring every assessment is not just a tick-the-box requirement but a valuable part of the project’s success. I take the time to educate my clients, ask the right questions, and provide tailored advice that’s grounded in both industry expertise and real-world experience.

At Great Southern Bushfire Assessments, you're not just getting a report — you're getting a trusted professional who truly listens and delivers with integrity.

Trusted Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) Assessments with Expert Guidance You Can Rely On

Great Southern Bushfire Assessments provides accurate, compliant and professionally prepared Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) assessments for projects across Western Australia.

Led by BPAD Accredited consultant Kate Billen, each assessment is grounded in a deep understanding of building and planning processes, the interpretation of AS 3959 Construction of Buildings in Bushfire-Prone Areas, and the practical application of WA Building Regulations as they relate to bushfire construction requirements.

This ensures your project is assessed correctly from the outset—reducing uncertainty, delays and costly redesigns.

Whether you are an architect seeking a dependable technical partner, a homeowner managing your own development application, or a builder delivering compliant construction outcomes, you receive clear, defensible advice tailored to your specific site conditions

What is a BAL Assessment?

A BAL assessment is a process to determine the potential exposure of a building to radiant heat, ember attack and direct flame contact. It is undertaken in accordance with  Australian Standard 3959 and is a key requirement for designing and constructing in bushfire-prone areas.

Unsure if You Need a BAL Assessment?

If you are building, renovating, or purchasing in a bushfire-prone area, a BAL assessment is typically required as part of the planning and building approval process.

If you are unsure whether your property is located within a designated bushfire-prone area, you can check the official DFES Bushfire Prone Area Map via the link below
